Martin Joseph Nicodemus Gabriel, Sr., 89 of Warrenton, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021 at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin. Martin was born on October 9, 1931 in Houston, Texas to Nicodemus and Regina (Hoffart) Gabriel. He was baptized on October 18, 1931 at All Saints Parish in Houston. Martin married the late Betty Ruth Pereira on January 28, 1952 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Houston and later moved to La Grange where they owned and operated their own dairy for 35 years. They also owned and operated Pop-A-Top in Warrenton.
Martin loved listening to KBUK’s program, The Trading Post as well as the Sunday morning church programs. Martin also enjoyed watching sports including football, basketball, baseball and car racing, The Weather Channel, and game shows including The Price is Right, Wheel of Fortune and Let’s Make a Deal. He loved motorcycles, fishing and Kleiber Tractor as he often wore one of their caps. Martin enjoyed his scratch offs, beer and afternoon coffee and he often prayed for his family and friends. If Martin muted the television and was quiet, it was known that he was praying. He was a hardworking man, caring husband and father and he loved his family, including his dogs. Martin will be dearly missed by many.
He is survived by one daughter, Sandy Polasek and husband Glenn, of La Grange, TX; three sons: Martin Gabriel, Jr. and wife Terry, of La Grange, TX; Michael Gabriel and wife Cathy, of Houston, TX and Larry Gabriel of Warrenton, TX, one son-in-law, Darrold Mertz of Warrenton, TX; one sister, Agnes Halliburton of Houston, TX along with 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty Gabriel; daughter, Sharon Mertz; son, Danny Gabriel; grandson, Larry Lynn Gabriel, Jr.; and five brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, July 5, 2021 from 4PM-6PM at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange, TX. A rosary will be recited at 5:00PM. Funeral Services will be held at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home at 11:00AM on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Burial will follow at Florida Chapel Cemetery in Round Top.
