Virginia Lou Wied Behrens Schaefer, age 86, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026, in Smithville, Texas. She was born on November 14, 1939, in Warrenton, Texas, to Monroe and Adele Wied.
Virginia was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, Texas. Throughout her life, she devoted herself to caring for others as a homemaker and housekeeper.
Virginia was a sweet, caring, and feisty little lady who left a special impression on everyone she met. She loved visiting thrift stores, spending time with her friends, gardening, and gathering with family. She was known for the wonderful knickknacks she discovered and brought home, as well as her beloved collection of beanies.
One of Virginia’s greatest joys was watching her son, Ronnie, grow into one of the most humble and kindhearted people you could ever meet. Her family and friends will deeply miss her quirkiness, her beautiful smile, and the joy she brought to everyone around her.
Virginia is survived by her only child, Ronnie Gene Behrens. She was also lovingly known as Grandma to Larry Hayes and his wife, Sandra; Freddy Meek and his wife, Kate; Blane Meek and his wife, Kendall; Keleh Morrison and her husband, Alex; Steven Banks, Kyle Price and Bradley Leroy. She was Great-Grandma to Alex Hayes, Liam and Lowen Meek, and Jaxon Morrison. Although connected through love rather than blood, they were her family in every way that mattered. She is also lovingly remembered by Shirley Behrens and her best friend, Alberta Sikes.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe and Adele Wied; her brother, Wayne Wied; her brother-in-law, Fred Schaefer; and both of her husbands.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 28, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 10:30 a.m., with Elder Ron Hunt officiating. Burial will follow at La Grange City Cemetery, with attendees meeting at the pavilion.
Flowers are welcome, and those wishing to make a memorial donation may contribute to a local charity of their choice.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Virginia’s nurses, caregivers, and friends whose kindness and support brought her comfort and helped her live the best life possible.
