Norma Kirton

d. October 31, 2010

Early in the 20th century, a couple in Duncan, Okla. was blessed with a daughter who would bring joy to their family, enrich the quality of life for her siblings, express unending love for her husband, unselfishly devote her years as a mother to her three children, and exhibit continued amazement as to the abilities of her four grandchildren.

That couple was Delos and Nell Tillotson. Norma Adell Tillotson Kirton was born on Oct. 1, 1921. She was youngest sibling to DeNell and Bert. She married Bruce Kirton on Feb. 8, 1944. Her three children arrived over a span of 15 years - Kim, Chris, and Kevin. And then to Norma’s delight, her grandchildren began making their appearances - Kim and Kirk Craig’s son, Ryan, Kevin and Krista Kirton’s children, Ben, Chloe, and Anabel.

This fine figure of a woman (wouldn’t Norma just laugh at that description?) possessed an innate beauty and serenity that many admired but few could duplicate. She had a great appreciation for the aesthetic aspect of one’s everyday life. Her home and its surroundings always reflected her sense of refinement and culture, while also letting in a bit of humor. And boy did she love the color blue! It was probably by chance that her beautiful blue eyes always complemented her choices for accent and emphasis in whichever home of the dozen or so that the Kirtons happened to be in at the moment.

Norma Kirton stood out at any gathering - family, church, or otherwise. She loved to tease - always with that special twinkle in her eye. For over 15 years, Norma volunteered her time and shared her wit at the La Grange hospitals as an auxiliary member working in the gift shop and she sang in the First Presbyterian Church choir, always on key.

What a life well-lived, beautifully performed, and now, gracefully ended. As she said when her own mother passed away, “I will miss her forever.”
And yes, Norma, we will miss you forever.
