Funeral services for Marion Loyd Wessels, 90, of La Grange will be held on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of La Grange. Reverend Mel Hazelwood will officiate. Burial will be in the La Grange City Cemetery.
Mr. Wessels passed away Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Mounment Hill Nursing Center in La Grange. A son of the late Edward W. and Adela Hoelscher Wessels. Mr. Wessels was born in the community of Halsted near La Grange on May 14, 1917. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church. He was united in marriage with Ruth Gilliam on June 12, 1943, in La Grange.
A life long resident of the La Grange area, Mr. Wessels served as a constable and deputy sheriff of Fayette County in the 1940’s. He worked as an automobile parts salesman until his retirement in 1982. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in La Grange since he and his wife Ruth joined the church (then known as Travis Street United Methodist Church) in 1953. He was also, an honorary life-time director of the Fayette County Fair having worked as a committee member and director of the Poultry Department for many years. In his younger years, he was an avid horseman and enjoyed hunting and training hunting dogs. He enjoyed exhibiting fancy bantam chickens, pigeons, and doves most of his life.
Survivors include a son, James Roy Wessels of La Grange; a daughter, Ruth Ann Wessels of La Grange; one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Franklin Niesner of Victoria; and six nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wessels was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Ruth Gilliam Wessels; his parents; five brothers-in-law; and four sisters-in-law.
