John Roland Taylor, a beloved figure in his community, passed away peacefully in his home in Austin, Texas, on March 8, 2026, at the age of 88. He was surrounded by his family and cherished doggies “Nice Nala” and “Rosebud”. Born on December 6, 1937, in La Grange, Texas, John was a proud descendant of a German pioneer family that settled in La Grange in 1834 and carried with him the rich heritage of his lineage, including Czech roots from the Kubecka family.

John's early years were spent immersed in the natural beauty surrounding Buckner's Creek, where he developed a lifelong passion for fishing and hunting, activities deeply rooted in the Taylor family tradition. He was recognized as a talented athlete, enjoying his time playing football at La Grange High School, from which he graduated in 1956. His love for the University of Texas Longhorns marked a continuous chapter in his life, celebrating the school's rich sports heritage, notably as one of his grandsons graduated from the institution in 2015.

Following high school, John's dedication to service led him to enlist in the United States Navy, where he served in the Pacific Fleet aboard the USS Pictor. It was during his time in Yokosuka, Japan, that he met his former wife, Tomie Kayama. After completing his service, John returned to Texas, where he shifted gears from military life to a career with the United States Post Office, specifically on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. His nearly 40 years there were defined by diligence and commitment, all while raising two sons—John, Jr. and James, Sr.—and navigating the heartache of losing a third son, Joseph Ray, shortly after birth.

John's family included his son, James Roy Taylor, and four grandchildren: Megan C. Taylor, Tiffany R. Taylor (Boatman), Jordan R. Taylor, and James R. Taylor, Jr. Additionally, he cherished moments with his great-grandchild, Myla Boatman. Despite the loss of his oldest son, John, Jr., in 2007 and Tomie on Nov 11, 2019, along with other familial losses, John remained a steadfast and affectionate presence in the lives of those he loved.

After retiring in 2001, John fully embraced the joys of his hobbies, resuming fishing and hunting, and spending quality time with his family. A man of great kindness, John never hesitated to lend a hand to anyone in need, embodying an entrepreneurial spirit and an imaginative approach to life that inspired many. He enjoyed country western films and was a devoted fan of the original Star Trek series, with a particular fondness for Spock, a character he admired deeply. John was also an avid animal lover and often took in strays of all types (parrots, javelinas, cats, dogs, chickens, etc.).

Those who had the privilege of knowing John will remember him for his warm smile, his ability to uplift others, and his mesmerizing blue eyes that radiated kindness and understanding. He was often considered one of the best individuals to grace this world, a man of principle and compassion, deeply missed and forever cherished by his family. As he sets forth into eternity, may his gentle spirit find peace in heaven.
