John Carroll Ferguson, 74 of Houston passed away at his home in La Grange on October 31, 2025. A private family burial will take place in La Grange.
John Ferguson was born in Houston on February 17, 1951 to Paul Carroll and Lera (Bates) Ferguson. He graduated from Waltrip High School and later earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin University. He married Dallas Lindsay on September 27, 1980 in Irving, Texas and they later had two children, Aubrey and Ian.
Early in his career, John worked at Western Geophysical and eventually opened his own company, Nature’s Ways Resources in 1994. John was a pioneer in the composting industry. He was the original writer of the Texas compost regulations. He was the co-founder of the non-profit organization OHBA (Organics Horticulture Benefits Alliance). John also was a writer of many articles, research papers and even a book about the industry. He was a very well-known speaker and educator and often spoke to gardening clubs. John and Dallas purchased their Fayette County land 10 years ago as a restoration project and built their house there in March of 2024.
John is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Dallas (Lindsay) Ferguson; one son, Ian Ferguson of Houston and one daughter, Aubrey Bergauer of San Francisco. He preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Lera Furgeson.
