Gunther A."Grinny" Behrens, age 94 of La Grange, passed away on May 20, 2011, at Care Inn in La Grange.

Gunther was born July 10, 1916, to Adolph and Gesine (Knake) Behrens in Oldenburg, Texas. Gunther was a cook in the United States Navy. Over the years he would volunteer his time, cooking for various local service organizations. Gunther was a member of the American Legion Post 102 and a Charter member of VFW Post 5254. He served 16 years as Fayette County Commissioner. Gunther spent his free time playing dominos and watching Astros baseball.

Gunther is survived by his wife Leona (Mieth) Behrens of La Grange; two son’s Leslie Behrens of New Ulm, Richard Behrens and wife Eileen of La Grange; three grandchildren, Ciara Behrens of New Ulm, Sterling and Avery Behrens of La Grange; two sisters, Dora Moellenberg of La Grange, Laura Thac and husband Frank of Houston.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Almond (Al) Louis, Arthur, Rudolph (Slim), Edwin, and infant August E. Behrens, along with one sister Velma Speed.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday May 23, 2011, from 9:00 AM until 8:00 PM, at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange. Family will receive visitors from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 AM, Tuesday May 24, 2011, at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange.

Interment will follow at La Grange City Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley or charity of one’s choice.
