Gilbert grew up in Rek Hill and attended St. John’s Catholic School where he completed 8th grade and received a class ring. He married Mary Smidovec on October 20, 1963. Together they had three children: Lisa, Nancy and Michael. Gilbert was a lifetime rancher. He had cattle all around the Ellinger area and enjoyed taking a drive in the afternoons with a cold beer to check on his cattle.  Gilbert started working for the gravel pit in 1963. He worked as a mechanic there for 35 years until his retirement. After retirement, him and his brother, Norbert added another job to their list when they began Vrazel Trash Hauling. He gave up the trash business this past December. He worked nearly 20 years for the Columbus Livestock Company. He and Mary also ran Gil’s Barbecue every weekend for 38 years. When Gilbert wasn’t working, you could always find him at Hobo Inn. He spent half of his life at Hobo Inn alongside his brother, Norbert. Gilbert loved his beer, tobacco, scratch offs and his grandchildren. He was very proud of his grandchildren. But his GREAT grandchildren were EVERYTHING to him. They were the light of his life.
