George Edwin Nash was born May 15, 1934 in Galesburg, Illinois to Rebecca and Ed Nash. 8 years of piano lessons as a youth gave him his great love of classical music and was active in high school and community plays through the years. George loved magic and spent years doing shows around town with his sidekick Cookie (wife Bobbie), performing for every 3rd grade class in Valparaiso Community Schools teaching them about nutrition using magic.
George served 8 years in the Navy as a supply officer after graduating from college with a degree in Hotel / Restuarant Management from Michigan State University. He worked at Thorpe Hotel in Door County Wisconsin to pay for his college education.
George worked in the food service industry for all of his post Navy career, starting in Madison Wisconsin at the university and eventually to Valparaiso Indiana where he eventually retired. While working in the foodservice industry, George served as several state and national positions for the American School Food Service Association. George took his retirement very seriously and spent the remainder of his life faithful to his service ideals beginning with boy scouts, Jaycees, Kiawanis and Lions Club as well as his church. George served as a docent at Monument Hill Kreische Brewery State Park, the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix, and Festival Hill in Round Top as well as numerous other venues.
George’s years in the Navy and Jaycees gave him a great love of travel and was happiest on a cruise ship playing bridge. George was an avid bridge player, playing until he was 90 years old with anyone who would sit a spell and deal the cards.
George’s family loved the Northwoods of Wisconsin and spent many summers there with parents and grandparents. His family purchased a cabin on Lynx Lake in Presque Isle WI after their retirement so the tradition continued. George and Bobbie purchased a housekeeping resort on Lynx Lake when they retired and spent summers renting the cabins and winters traveling the south west where Bobbie’s children lived. 15 years ago, they made their final move to Fayette County where they have been blessed with many friends.
George is survived by his wife Bobbie of 45 years, sister Becky of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, step son Alan Gallenbeck, daughter in law Meegan, step daughter Shonda Merlo, grandchildren Cody (wife Ali) Gallenbeck, Cheyenne (husband Dylan) White, great grand sons Carson White and Whitt Gallenbeck, niece Sarah Black of Anchorage Alaska, nephew Bruce (wife Beth) of St. Paul Minn, nephew Brian (wife Pat),of Escanaba, MI and great nieces Maya and Sonja Black and great nephews Henry and Ian Black.
