Cistern, Texas

Edwin Lee Hughes passed away on December 7, 2022 in La Grange, Texas.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Edwin is scheduled for 11:00 AM on Monday, December 12, 2022 at the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Cistern with interment to follow at the church cemetery in Cistern.  A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 11 from 5-6 PM with a rosary at 6PM at the Fayette Memorial Funeral Home.

Edwin Hughes was born on June 27, 1934 to Delbert Clinton Hughes and Maude Alleane (Liles) Hughes. He married Estella Louise Stolle August 24, 1956 and later had two children.

Edwin loved this country while serving in the Air Force for over 22 years. He did a tour of duty in France during the Cuban Missile Crisis and a tour in Thailand during the Vietnam War. Hard work, family, religion and service was the backbone of his upbringing during very hard times in West Texas during the 40’s and 50’s.

Edwin graduated from Pampa High School and then went to North Texas State University for 1 and a half years. His love for his country had him choose the path of joining the Air Force. He worked with computers in the Air Force and was involved with many national security sensitive materials. After retiring, Edwin and Estella moved to the community of Cistern to be closer to family. After moving to Cistern, they both joined the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in the Cistern Community to devote more time to their faith and serving the community. He began to devote more and more time with the church helping in countless ways during his life in Cistern. This ranged from reading during mass, helping giving communion, or working on the church picnic committee, opening the church for mass or special occasions and helping run the auctions during the church picnics.

Edwin also served in many other organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign War, Farm Bureau, Catholic Life, and selling RVOS Insurance. Some of his other interests were ranching, hunting, fishing, his dogs, family and western movies. All of these left him and his wife with hours of enjoyment with their friends, family and service to the Community. He was loved by so many and will be missed dearly by his friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Estella Hughes; son Dale Hughes and wife Cynthia of Boerne; daughter Karen Vinklarek and husband Ernest of Cistern; grandchildren, Steven Hughes and wife Viviana, Jeremy Vinklarek, and Ashley Lockett Vinklarek, Brendan Hennelly and wife Seanna, and Stephen Hennelly; great grandchildren, Zachary Vinklarek, Kyle Lockett, Jaci Lockett, Ayani Hughes, Gisele Hughes, Owen Hennelly and Emery Hennelly.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Maude Hughes.
