Docie King Gardescu, 97, of La Grange, and formerly of Houston, passed away at Care Inn in La Grange on June 30, 2011. Docie was born on July 17, 1913 to Elijah Monroe King and Annie Richardson King in the community of Kickapoo Creek in Trinity County, the oldest of eight children.

She was united in marriage to Dr. Ionel I. Gardescu on January 3, 1937, in North Woodstock, New Hampshire. Upon his retirement they moved to La Grange where she taught school in Hermes Elementary until 1979. She was preceded in death by her husband as well as by her grandsons, Steven Gardescu and Robert Villasana.

Docie was an active member of First Baptist Church of La Grange where she served as leader of the G.A.'s, Sunday school teacher, and an active member of the Senior Citizens Group. As a former teacher, she was active in the Retired Teachers' Association and was a proud Daughter of the Republic.

She is survived by her daughter, Ana Villasana, 11 grandchildren, including Richard and Cristina Villasana, D. Bryan and Tamera Villasana, Victoria Villasana and her husband, Christian Madsen, James Villasana and Sean Villasana and five great-grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her step-son, Paul Gardescu, his wife, Betty, and also survived by her sister, Corine Miller of Baytown, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Sunday July 3, 2011 at Fayette Memorial Funeral Home.

Interment will follow at La Grange City Cemetery.
