Brian L. Sergeant, age 68 of San Antonio, formerly of La Grange died on February 9, 2023.
He passed away on National Pizza Day. If you knew him, you’ll agree this was fitting.
He was born in Ottawa, Illinois, attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, N.M. Before graduating from the Dallas Institute of Funeral Service in 1979, while in college he toured parts of Asia and the South Pacific as part of a USO show. From 1987-2005 he was the owner of Sergeant Memorial Funeral Home in La Grange. He was also certified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as a Mortuary Disaster Coordinator and considered himself fortunate never to be called upon by them.
During his time in La Grange (and for the majority of his life) he played guitar and sang, either solo or with a band at many different venues from New Mexico to Illinois and mainly Texas. After leaving La Grange and retiring, his full time “job” became singing and playing at many places in San Antonio. This came to be due to being bored by retirement and his son’s suggestion when he said, “Dad, get your guitar and play…there are many places in San Antonio”. For a time in the late 1980’s he was very involved in the Optimists International, serving as President of the La Grange Club, Lt. Governor and then Secretary and Treasurer of the South Central District of Texas.
Survivors include his son Jared and wife Amanda, his mother and father Ruth and Dolly, his sister Kelli and her family and all true Chicago Cubs fans!
He is preceded in death by his wife Katherine.
Private memorial services were held and memorials are suggested to the Make A Wish Foundation (1934 N.W. Military Hwy Ste. 210 San Antonio, Texas 78213 (210)-525-9474.
